Ending an arrangement fairly

Notice, final pay and paperwork.

4 min read

Arrangements end for all kinds of reasons. Ending them fairly protects your reputation and your household.

Steps

  1. Give the notice (or pay in lieu of notice) your agreement promised.
  2. Pay final wages on time; some states set deadlines.
  3. Pay out accrued time off if your agreement or state law requires it.
  4. Collect keys, remove codes.
  5. Provide year-end tax forms for household employees.
  6. Offer a reference if you can give an honest, positive one.
